In this second post of the series on Nuremberg, I'm just going to show some pictures of the old city. One of the interesting things about Nuremberg is that the Pegnitz River flows almost directly through the middle of the old city. This means that there are a number of bridges that provide different views of parts of the old city.
This particular picture is near the western wall of the old city. You can see another bridge, and the tower above is right new the western wall.
A different view down the river. One of things I at first thought would be interesting was to live in one of the apartments along the river, like the ones you can see on the right. But then I thought about the sheer number of tourists trumbling through every day and accompanying noise from all cafe's and restaurants, and realized it might not be that great. :)
And yet another view down the river, with a different bridge and different apartments.
The structure there sticking out over the river is the Hospice of the Holy Spirit. Founded in 1332, this was one of the largest hospitals in the Middle Ages.
This is a view looking up at the front of the St. Lorenz Church. Sorry for the slightly crooked angle there. I wanted to try and get a picture showing the front of the church from the ground up, but the front of the church is a favorite meet up place for tourists it seems, and I could never get a shot that did not have a horde of people at the bottom. So I figured this was the best I was going to get.
This is now a small museum if I remember right. Unfortunately, I don't remember what for, or what the building was originally (maybe the jail from the looks of it). But I really like the way it looks.
I don't remember the name of this church either (there are about 8 I think within the old city walls), but the rather plain exterior (compared to the others) belies a pretty cool interior.
The interior of the church has these awesome red and pink with beige marble columns, and the giant dome. With just plain windows (no stained glass), there interior is both well lit and pretty dramatic.
Along the inside of the dome are these statues of the saints.
More of the saints.
And lastly, a look at alter area. This was the only church I saw where it seemed that sermons were conducted from the middle of the church, under the dome. It was an interesting set up.
